How does the BC PNP SIRS score work?

The Skills Immigration Registration System scores registrations out of 200: 120 points of human capital and 80 points of economic factors. Human capital is directly related work experience, highest level of education and language, each capped at 40. Economic factors are the hourly wage of your B.C. job offer, worth up to 55, and the area of employment, worth up to 25.

Directly related work experience (plus 10 for Canadian experience, 10 for currently working in the offered role) 40
Highest level of education (plus 8 for study in B.C. or 6 elsewhere in Canada, plus 5 for a B.C. professional designation) 40
Language (lowest CLB of four abilities, plus 10 for English and French) 40
Hourly wage of the B.C. job offer 55
Area of employment in B.C. (plus 10 for regional experience or regional alumni) 25

Because experience, education and language each stop at 40, wage and location are usually where a registration score can still move once your human capital is maxed out.

How much is each dollar of hourly wage worth?

One point per dollar. The table starts at 1 point for $16.00–16.99 and rises by a point every dollar until it caps at 55 points for $70.00 and above. Moving from $25 to $35 an hour is worth 10 points — the same swing as going from CLB 5 to CLB 7 in language.

Below $16.00 0
$16.00 – $16.99 1
$30.00 – $30.99 15
$50.00 – $50.99 35
$70.00 and above 55 (maximum)

The offered wage must sit inside the WorkBC or federal Job Bank range for that occupation and location. Bonuses, commissions, overtime, tips and housing allowances are not counted as wage.

How much does working outside Metro Vancouver change the score?

Between 15 and 25 points. Area 1 (Metro Vancouver) scores 0, Area 2 (Squamish, Abbotsford, Agassiz, Mission and Chilliwack) scores 5, and Area 3, meaning everywhere else in B.C., scores 15. A further 10 points are available for regional experience or regional alumni — but not if the job itself is in Area 1.

Area 1 — Metro Vancouver Regional District 0
Area 2 — Squamish, Abbotsford, Agassiz, Mission, Chilliwack 5
Area 3 — the rest of British Columbia 15
Regional experience or regional alumni (one or the other) +10

Frequently asked questions

What SIRS score do I need to be invited?

There is no fixed cut-off. BC PNP invites by category, and the minimum score varies widely between the skilled worker, healthcare, entry-level and semi-skilled, and international graduate categories, and shifts as allocations change. Check the recent invitation scores published by WelcomeBC for your own category rather than a single pass mark.

Can I register without a B.C. job offer?

Most Skills Immigration categories require an indeterminate full-time job offer from a B.C. employer, and the 80 points of economic factors all depend on that offer. Without one, those 80 points are unavailable and the registration score is substantially lower.

How is part-time experience counted?

At 50 percent. Full time means at least 30 hours per week; part-time hours are credited at half their duration. All directly related experience must have been earned in the last 10 years and must have been paid.

Does work experience gained while studying count?

Work on a study permit generally does not count. The exception is a paid co-op term, which can count if you completed the program of study, the co-op was full time at 30 or more hours per week, and it was in a skilled occupation. Proof of graduation is required.

How many points is studying in B.C. worth?

Eight points for completing your highest level of education at a post-secondary institution in B.C., or six elsewhere in Canada. The bonus only applies to the highest credential you declare: a foreign master's as your highest credential means a separate B.C. diploma earns nothing. Distance learning and language programs are excluded.

How do I claim the 10 bilingual points?

You need valid English and French test results taken within the past two years, with CLB 4 or higher in all four abilities on both, and you must submit both results with your application. A single language test does not qualify.

Weighing BC PNP against Express Entry?

A provincial nomination is worth 600 CRS points, so the two routes are often run in parallel rather than chosen between. Which order makes sense depends on your occupation, your job offer and how much time your current status leaves you.
